ASSIGNMENT 1: Zentangle Workbook

Download the workbook. Complete 10 of the designs by copying step by step. Try the "design your own" on the last page. NOTE: You do not need to fill out every box on the page! If you can complete all the steps carefully in one box, go ahead!

Send photos of your progress or any questions to dmartensreece@lssd.ca

Or, drop the booklet off at the school and I will mark it.

ASSIGNMENT 2: Zentangle Animal

Choose one of the animal faces. Fill the face with a mixture of Zentangle Designs copied from your booklet and pattern designs of your own. You can choose to make the patterns as a border around the animal or in the actual face. Once your pencil rough copy is finished, outline all the designs using a thin black Sharpie marker. Next, colour in the designs with a regular black Sharpie markers. Make sure you are careful and precise.

ASSIGNMENT 3: Watercolour Leaves

Watch the YouTube tutorial, How to Use Watercolour, Introduction Tutorial, (6:39) Spend some time setting up your work area with a newspaper underneath, two cups of water, an old white plastic lid, your brushes and paint set. Play around with your paints, seeing what they can do and getting comfortable with the materials. Find the worksheet provided in your portfolio or download the PDF file below. Follow the step-by-step directions for watercolour painting below.

1)  Using the wet-on-wet technique, paint water onto plain paper and then add colour to the leaves on your paper, letting colours mix. TIP: Use lots of water!

2)  Mix your own autumn-inspired colours rather than using the paints straight from the container. Add these carefully to your leaf colours. TIP: Don't paint too thickly!

3) Use a small. fine brush to add lines and details to make your leaves look realistic. TIP: No black, please!

ASSIGNMENT 4: Wash and Fun!

Watch the YouTube tutorial: Watercolour Background Wash Tutorial (5:12)

Follow the steps below to complete the painting assignment.

1)  Choose your own colours to make a colourful free-form wash on the watercolour paper provided in your portfolio. TIP: Make sure to tape it down on all four sides with masking tape onto the heavier paper in your kit.

2)  Add a few sprinkles of table salt while the paper is still wet to see unique "sparkle" effects. Brush off the salt when the paint is totally dry.

3)  Complete the painting using your own ideas. You could try drawing very lightly so the pencil lines don't show, and then painting over the lightly coloured wash.

ASSIGNMENT 5: Line Design with Focal Point

This design will be the rough copy in pencil for the upcoming Scratchboard Assignment. IN ORDER TO RECEIVE YOUR SCRATCHBOARD AND TOOLS, YOU MUST HAND BACK YOUR PORTFILIO!!!!!

1) Watch the attached Powerpoint Presentation which shows several famous artists who used LINE in their artwork.

2) As a warm-up, do the following two exercises either in your sketchbook, or print the pdf files from your computer.

3) Now that you have practiced making lines, create a Line Design with a ruler on a white piece of paper. The lines should be carefully drawn and very straight. Use your creativity to fill the page, but plan for the design to have one place where the eye is drawn to, called a FOCAL POINT. A focal point is the most interesting part of the piece; a place where you look first when you see the design. Be creative, don't do something so simple that it lacks interest.

ASSIGNMENT 6: Scratchboard Line Design

Now that you have a Line Design with a focal point, use this rough copy as a guide to look at and draw onto your scratchboard. A scratchboard is a heavy piece of coloured paper with a black coating on top. When the black part is scratched off with your scratching tool (a pointed stick, or pencil without lead), the colour underneath is revealed. It can also be scratched with a metal tool, such as a paperclip.

1) View the Scratchboard Images attached. Your scratchboard will be multicoloured, and possible glittered!!

2) Draw your Line Design onto your scratchboard with your scratch tool and a ruler. Scratching to reveal more colour can help your focal point to stand out. Good luck!

ASSIGNMENT 6: Cookie Drawing on a Grid

Watch the attached YouTube videos:

Fun Test: Which is Real? Chocolate Chip Cookie Drawing Challenge! (you can stop at 1:12)

How to Draw Yummy Cookies

After watching the videos, find the materials you need to draw a cookie of your own. WARNING: you may need to add Oreos to your list of supplies!

You will also need:

2B pencil

white eraser

cookie grid handout

You have watched my demonstration of using a grid to draw a cookie. Now is your turn. Use the lines to help you start the cookie outline in the right place. Remember to DRAW LIGHT UNTIL YOU GET IT RIGHT! With a 2B pencil, you hardly have to touch the page in order to get a nice line. Go slowly. Once the contour or outline is good, try the inside details. This could be chocolate chips, holes, words, nuts or crumbs. These are also called textures and adding them to your drawing is what will make it look realistic. Take your time, be patient, and use your eraser, but also, don't stress out, just have fun...and a snack!

CHALLENGE: Draw a cookie with shading, as in the Yummy Cookie video in your sketchbook, and use a grid!

HAND IN YOUR WORK: Once you have drawn two cookies, you can either take a photo of your work and email it to me or keep it INSIDE YOUR PORTFOLIO and hand it in later, at the end of the unit.

ASSIGNMENT 7: Hand Drawings 1-2-3

In this assignment, you will be using a grid to draw three different hands, one box at a time, so that you end up with a BIGGER drawing of the original picture. Watch the demonstration lesson carefully, as I show you how to pay attention to the look of the line, going slowly box by box, drawing lightly and taking your time. Knowing how to use this grid method to make a drawing larger is a very useful tool for an artist. Good luck! I have attached the hand pages as a PDF at the side just in case. Also see the attached, CRITERIA for HOW YOU WILL BE MARKED on this!
